Info on Sungai Juru
Background
Sungai Juru was the lifeline for Kuala Sungai Juru where most of the villages were fishermen and their livelihood were dependent on fisheries and the area was famous for its cockle-breeding industry. Back then, the river was not affected by any form of pollution.
However, the environmental landscape has changed when industrial and housing developments as well as human settlements began to take place along the riverbanks of Sungai Juru since 1970s.
In early 1970s, The Penang State Government began to pursue industrialization programs. The state through its development agency, Penang Development Corporation (PDC) earmarked large track of land in Prai along the northern side of Sungai Juru and developed it over the years into the largest industrial corridor of the northern region. It has since become the main center of workplace with hundreds of thousands in employment and demand for housing units surged which led to rapid housing schemes nearby the industrial area namely Taman Nagasari, Taman Perai Indah, Taman Pelangi, Taman Bukit Minyak. Illegal human settlements along the riverbanks of Sungai Juru were also sharply increased.
The increase in population along with the rapid pace of industrialization over the past few decades in Prai have brought along the problems of river pollution as well. The rapid housing development at the upstream of Sungai Juru, known as Sungai Rambai area which used to be a flood-prone area, into residential suburb of Bukit Mertajam comprising housing estates such as Taman Makok, Desa Damai and Taman Sungai Rambai further aggravated the stage of pollution which occurred at a much faster rate than measures taken to counter it.
Geographical
Sungai Juru is located about 12 kilometres south-east of Butterworth somewhere between the current Penang Bridge and the proposed 2nd Penang bridge.
The uptream of Sungai Juru are made up of 2 rivers ie. Sungai Permatang Rawa and Sungai Rambai and other tributaries whilst the Sungai Juru proper, with a length of about 7.95 kilometres forms the downstream, flowing from Bukit Minyak area towards the west till South Channel Sea.
The North-South Highway passes through Sungai Juru at 144.9 km of the highway, traveling towards Alor Setar from Ipoh
