YB Dato Seri Chia Kwang Chye, deputy information minister of Malaysia cum secretary-general of Party GERAKAN and his entourage was invited to visit Sungai Juru on 12th August 2007 to view for himself the changes that taken place in Kuala Sungai Juru after a long lapse of 30 years after his short stay in Kuala Sungai Juru in the 1970’s. Kg Kuala Sungai Juru, a Malay fishermen village with only 30 houses in the 1970’s, has increased to 103 houses.

The “Program Pemimpin Balik Kampung”, organized by LA 21 Cultural and Tourism Working Group, started off with a cruise visit to the downstream as well as the river mouth of Sungai Juru. Here are the latest views and close up pictures of the riverbanks of Sungai Juru, one of the most polluted rivers in Penang that the fishermen community has been besieged with for more than 30 years.

During his speech, YB Chia called on the relevant agencies to step up effort to curb pollution of Sungai Juru and to use the fund allocation under the 9th Malaysia Plan to rehabilitate Sungai Juru whilst YB Huan Cheng Guan, Member of Parliamen for Batu Kawan who was also present at the same function told the residents there that he will continue to bring up the issue of river pollution in parliamen house.
