(DID) has recently organized a 3-day training program – “River Ranger TOT – Training of trainers” under the program of One State One River campaign (Northern Zone). More than 60 participants comprises DID officials, school teachers, NGOs and CBOs from the northern states of Penang, Kedah and Perlis attended the training programe held at Pearl View Hotel, Perai from 3 to 5th July 2007. The 3-day river auditing programe was conducted by Dr K. Kalithasan and his team from Global Environment Center
(GEC).

JPS Malaysia telah mengadakan satu khusus latihan 3 hari di bawah program Satu Negeri Satu Sungai. Komponen Penglibatan Komuniti Setempat – River Ranger – Training of Trainers(Zon Utara). Program latihan River Ranger ini dikendalikan oleh Dr K. Kalithasan bersama dengan pegawainya dari Global Environment Center (GEC). Lebih daripada 60 peserta termasuk pegawai JPS, guru sekolah dan wakil NGOs daripada Pulau Pinang, Kedah dan Perlis menyertai khusus latihan ini yang telah dilangsungkan di Pearl View Hotel Perai selama 3 hari dari 3hb Julai hingga 5hb Julai 2007.

Participants gathered at Sungai Rambai (Site 2) behind SM Jit Sin, Bukit Mertajam for on site river auditing survey.

On the first day, six modules of papers have been presented which, amongst others, focused on environmental and water education, issues and pollution threats faced by rivers in Malaysia and Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM). Participants were also taught on how to determine the ecological address of a river or its tributary as well as river mapping.
On the second day, participants were grouped into four team for on-site field survey. 3 specific field locations of the rivers within the Sungai Juru Basin area have been identified for field survey purposes namely Sungai Ara near Taman Mutiara, Berapit (up-stream), Sungai Rambai near Sekolah Menengah Jit Sin (mid-stream) and Borrow Pit Tok Keramat (down stream) near Perai Industrial Area.

Each team was given a water testing kit and required to carry out a river health check involving physical, chemical and biological aspects of the river at the specific field locations and record down the findings or results in the report card.
After the on-site field survey, each team was required to present their findings and results in the evening. Participants were also reminded of the importance of correct techniques and processes when conducting the river auditing survey at each field locations.
On the last day, participants were taught on river ranger skill training and presentation.

The water quality from Perai Industrial Area – yellowish in color, low dissolve oxygen level, high turbidity level, acidic, lack of aquatic life etc… indicating that the water is industrial waste water which is in a seriously polluted condition.
