The envinronment awareness prgramme for Bukit Tengah area has been held at Juru River Dam area on 4th Nov 2007. The program was organised by LA 21 Environment Working Group for Bukit Tengah Area and launched by YB Ng Siew Lai ADUN Bukit tengah. About 600 people turned up for the event including 160 students from MRSM Transkrian, Nibong Tebal. Amongst the activities held during the event were fishing competition, children coloring contest, water quality test and EM “Effective microorganism” demonstration, exhibition, quiz contest, aerobic exercise etc.

Program kesedaran alam sekitar peringkat Kadun Bukit Tengah telah dilangsungkan di Empangan Sungai Juru pada 4hb Nov 2007. Program ini dianjurkan oleh LA21 Pasukan Cara Hidup Sihat, Keselamatan dan Alam Sekitar Bukit Tengah telah mendapat penyertaan lebih kurang 600 peserta termasuk 160 pelajar dari MRSM Transkrian Nibong Tebal dan telah dilancarkan oleh ADUN Bukit Tengah YB Ng Siew Lai.

Pelbagai aktiviti telah diadakan pada pagi ahad tersebut antaranya, pertandingan memancing ikan, pertandingan mewarna kanak-kanak, pocho-pocho, persembahan boria, demonstrasi ujian kualiti air sungai dan demonstrasi EM dan pameran daripada 9 agensi kerajaan dan NGO.

LA 21 Environment Working Group for Bukit Tengah Area will be organising an Environment Awareness Program on 4th November 2007 (Sunday) at the Juru River Dam area, Time from 8 am to 12 noon.

The program, with its theme “Environment preservation, our shared responsibility”, will be officially launched by Penang State Assemblyman for Bukit Tengah Area, YB Ng Siew Lai. About 500 participants including 150 students from nearby schools are expected to join various activities of the program!

Some of the programme activities are;-

Fishing competition,
Children coloring contest,
Water quality test and EMO “Effective Micro organism” demonstration;
Exhibition,
Quiz contest,
Aerobic exercise,
Lucky draw, etc

LA 21 Pasukan Kerja Cara Hidup Sihat, Keselamatan dan Alam Sekitar Bukit Tengah akan mengadakan satu Program Kesedaran Alam Sekitar di Empangan Sungai Juru pada 4hb November 2007, Hari Ahad jam 8.00 pagi hingga 12 tengahari. Program ini bertema “Pemulihan Alam Sekitar Tangungjawab Bersama” dan akan dirasmikan oleh ADUN Bukit Tengah, YB Puan Ng Siew Lai. Jawatankuasa program menjangkakan seramai 500 peserta/penduduk di sekitar Bukit Tengah termasuk 150 orang pelajar sekolah menengah akan menyertai program ini.

A group of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) students comprising 65 of them, who has earlier come to know about Sungai Juru through sungaijuru.com portal, contacted Friends of Sungai Juru expressing their interest to visit the river as one of their destinations during their 3-day visit to Penang. The purpose of the visit is to give exposure to the students as well as to enhance students knowledge on environment management.

On site to receive them are Friends of Sungai Juru and Chairman of Rukun Tetangga Taman Bukit Minyak, Mr Tan Chai Liang who later gave a short briefing about the pollution of Sungai Juru, past activities and programs. A representative from Penang DID also gave a short briefing to the students. Also present at site are Puan Cecelia Wong, a Councillor of MPSP, Mr Chew Eng Seng, officer of MPSP as well as 2 representatives from DID Penang and committee members of Rukun Tetangga Taman Bukit Minyak.

Satu rombongan pelajar dari Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) telah mengadakan lawatan teknikal ke Sungai Juru pada 13hb September 2007. Rombongan seramai 65 pelajar ini telah menghubungi Rakan Sungai Juru 2 bulan yang lepas dan menyatakan hasrat mereka melawat Sungai Juru setelah mengetahui Sungai Juru dan aktiviti Rakan Sungai Juru melalui portal sungaijuru.com. Tujuan lawatan ini adalah untuk memberi pendedahan kepada para pelajar mengenai pentingnya memelihara alam sekitar supaya dapat memahami dengan lebih mendalam tentang pengurusan alam sekitar.

Ketibaaan para pelajar di Empangan Sungai Juru disambut oleh Rakan Sungai Juru dan Pengerusi KRT Taman Bukit Minyak Encik Tan Chai Liang yang juga telah memberi taklimat kepada para pelajar tentang pencemaran Sungai Juru dan aktiviti yang telah dijalankan.Wakil JPS juga dijemput untuk memberi taklimat kepada para pelajar UMT. Turut hadir dalam majlis tersebut adalah Puan Cecelia Wong, Ahli Majlis MPSP, Encik Chew Eng Seng, pegawai MPSP, 2 wakil JPS Pulau Pinang dan ahli-ahli jawatankuasa KRT Taman Bukit Minyak.

The Penang state level Malaysian Environment Week program has been officially launched by the honorable Chief Minister of Penang, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon at Queensbay Mall, Bayan Baru on 24th August 2007. The week-long program with its theme – “ Environment Preservation, shared responsibility”, was aimed at enhancing public awareness towards environment through various activities as well as encouraging the public to be more sensitive and share responsibility in protecting and preserving environment.

Immediately after the event launching, the Chief Minister was invited to present prizes to winners of several contests including Penang Environment Quiz Contest 2007. Below are some snapshots of the event and prize presentation to quiz winners ….

Whislt we were conducting the water monitoring tests, we spotted 2 activities along the river banks there ;-

Angler, Mohamad Syakirin Bin Ismail 24 years old, showing us his catch at Juru Dam – “ikan bulan”.

A scavenger spotted busy salvaging plastic/mineral bottles at garbage site near to the suspension bridge of Juru Dam…..for recycling use !!. Like old newspaper, household plastic /mineral bottles can be collected for recycle and reuse !!

YB Dato Seri Chia Kwang Chye, deputy information minister of Malaysia cum secretary-general of Party GERAKAN and his entourage was invited to visit Sungai Juru on 12th August 2007 to view for himself the changes that taken place in Kuala Sungai Juru after a long lapse of 30 years after his short stay in Kuala Sungai Juru in the 1970’s. Kg Kuala Sungai Juru, a Malay fishermen village with only 30 houses in the 1970’s, has increased to 103 houses.

The “Program Pemimpin Balik Kampung”, organized by LA 21 Cultural and Tourism Working Group, started off with a cruise visit to the downstream as well as the river mouth of Sungai Juru. Here are the latest views and close up pictures of the riverbanks of Sungai Juru, one of the most polluted rivers in Penang that the fishermen community has been besieged with for more than 30 years.

During his speech, YB Chia called on the relevant agencies to step up effort to curb pollution of Sungai Juru and to use the fund allocation under the 9th Malaysia Plan to rehabilitate Sungai Juru whilst YB Huan Cheng Guan, Member of Parliamen for Batu Kawan who was also present at the same function told the residents there that he will continue to bring up the issue of river pollution in parliamen house.

Department of Irrigation and Drainage Malaysia (DID) has recently organized a 3-day training program – “River Ranger TOT – Training of trainers” under the program of One State One River campaign (Northern Zone). More than 60 participants comprises DID officials, school teachers, NGOs and CBOs from the northern states of Penang, Kedah and Perlis attended the training programe held at Pearl View Hotel, Perai from 3 to 5th July 2007. The 3-day river auditing programe was conducted by Dr K. Kalithasan and his team from Global Environment Center (GEC).

JPS Malaysia telah mengadakan satu khusus latihan 3 hari di bawah program Satu Negeri Satu Sungai. Komponen Penglibatan Komuniti Setempat – River Ranger – Training of Trainers(Zon Utara). Program latihan River Ranger ini dikendalikan oleh Dr K. Kalithasan bersama dengan pegawainya dari Global Environment Center (GEC). Lebih daripada 60 peserta termasuk pegawai JPS, guru sekolah dan wakil NGOs daripada Pulau Pinang, Kedah dan Perlis menyertai khusus latihan ini yang telah dilangsungkan di Pearl View Hotel Perai selama 3 hari dari 3hb Julai hingga 5hb Julai 2007.

On the first day, six modules of papers have been presented which, amongst others, focused on environmental and water education, issues and pollution threats faced by rivers in Malaysia and Integrated River Basin Management (IRBM). Participants were also taught on how to determine the ecological address of a river or its tributary as well as river mapping.

On the second day, participants were grouped into four team for on-site field survey. 3 specific field locations of the rivers within the Sungai Juru Basin area have been identified for field survey purposes namely Sungai Ara near Taman Mutiara, Berapit (up-stream), Sungai Rambai near Sekolah Menengah Jit Sin (mid-stream) and Borrow Pit Tok Keramat (down stream) near Perai Industrial Area.

Each team was given a water testing kit and required to carry out a river health check involving physical, chemical and biological aspects of the river at the specific field locations and record down the findings or results in the report card.

After the on-site field survey, each team was required to present their findings and results in the evening. Participants were also reminded of the importance of correct techniques and processes when conducting the river auditing survey at each field locations.

On the last day, participants were taught on river ranger skill training and presentation.

A workshop on Green Productivity(GP) has recently been organized by LA21 Perai Industrial Estate Environmental Management Working Group at the Dewan Auditorium MPSP on 17th May 2007.

A total of about 100 participants attended the half day workshop. The workshop, officially launched by Encik Farizan Bin Darus, President of the local council, MPSP, was briefed and conducted by
Penang SERI’s Director, Dato’ Dr Leong Yueh Kwong together with two research officers. Amongst the topics highlighted during the workshop were introduction of GP, its principles and concept, correlation of productivity and environment, guidelines and application, and benefits of GP as well as two case studies. Through this workshop, it is hoped more industries within Perai Industrial Area will be aware of GP and are encourage to adopt GP practices. Learn more about Green Productivity click here.

The Penang Environmental Quiz 2007 and the website of sungaijuru.com, the first conservational portal on river in Penang, has been officially launched by Member of Parlimen for Batu Kawan YB Huan Cheng Guan at RT Community Hall, Taman Bukit Minyak, Bukit Mertajam on 6th May 2007.
The event was also attended by YB Ng Siew Lai, ADUN Bukit Tengah and Chairman of LA 21 healthy lifestyle, security and environmental Working Group for Bukit Tengah Area, Penang State DOE Deputy Director, Mr Muniandy Mariappen, MPSP Councillor Cecelia Wong and chairman of nearby Residents Association.
